Tomorrow, I will teach my two 10th grade advanced blocks about the the necessity for art a midst human despair. Will be reading Primo Levi’s poem, “Shema” and his curse to the apathetic

And we will read the journal entry of one of my students who is openly NOT empathetic towards the holocaust and other’s suffering around the world.

We’ll finish the final scene of the Pianist where Wladek’s music humanizes himself in the face of a Nazi captain, which ultimately saves Wladek’s life.

Over the weekend, they will need to research one person who was oppressed by genocide and write a poem in honor of that person’s humanity.
